"Hand's On Learning Is The Best Teacher"
It's often said that we only remember 10% of what we read or hear, 50% of what we see and nearly 100% of what we do! This translates into 10% effective: Reading the newsletters or attending a seminar, 50% effective: Watching 100+ educational videos on TV or from a website and finally 100% effective: Hands-on guided experience.
So make your New Year's resolution a promise to yourself to spend more hands-on time working with your favorite quilting technique or challenge yourself to try something new. Remember: "Hands-on for 2012!"
"Color Wheel Basics for Quilters"

Imagine you ran out of a specific fabric and need a little more to complete your quilt. However, you don't know the name of the manufacturer, collection, or designer of that print. Local quilt shops have run out of it or don't carry that line and you are pulling your hair out looking for it. Before you go bald and your family goes crazy living with a must-find-that-fabric quilter, try this website. Take a picture of the fabric, upload it, and within seconds locate an online retailer that has the fabric in stock. I love it!

MQN News
MCQA member Alice Johnson has assumed the role of President of MQN for 2011 and 2012. Alice has been a member of our state organization for many years volunteering her time as a board member for Region #1, writing articles for the link as well as serving on a variety of committees. If you would like to be involved in MQN for our region, please contact Alice. Thanks to Alice for everything you have done and continue to do to continue the work of MQN!
MCQA is a member of the Michigan Quilt Network, a state organization founded in 1989 to promote the art of quilting throughout the state of Michigan. Further information about MQN may be obtained by viewing their website or by contacting MCQA members Alice Johnson or Cindy Yackel.

We are located in Region 1 of MQN which encompasses all of the UP. Each year one of the MQN statewide regions is responsible for making the raffle quilt for the annual MQN Showcase quilt show. Raffle tickets were sold and the drawing took place at the 2011 Showcase in October in Roscommon. The quilt was won by a lucky MQN member from Region 5. If you would like to read her wonderful thank you letter sent to Region 1 members who worked on the quilt, please click here.

In cooperation with MCQA, Region 1 has sponsored a Kids' Quilt Project to promote young people's knowledge and interest in quilting. The four week project took place 2nd/3rd grade classroom at North Star Academy Elementary in Marquette. More information is available by clicking here. The quilts were featured in a special exhibit at the Marquette County Quilters' Autumn Comforts Quilt show on October 16 -17, 2010. A picture of the display may be seen by clicking here and scrolling through the pictures from the show.
Region 1 hosted a trunk show and lecture during our 2010 Autumn Comforts Quilt Show. Dan Burke of Lansing presented a very worthwhile and interesting program on paper piecing. He spoke of his personal quilting history with the highlight being the many gorgeous intricately paper pieced quilts which he has made. He delights in using brilliantly colored fabrics against dark backgrounds. One quilt in particular featured over 100 fabrics arranged by their various shades and tints (against a black background) so the colors flowed one into another. More of Dan's quilts are on his website at http://www.quiltingbytheriver.com/

Michigan Quilt Art Invitational
Michigan Quilt Artist Invitational brings together the work of Michigan artists who are committed to using the quilt form as a vehicle for visual expression. Each year selected artists create an original quilt based on a theme. These quilts then form the traveling exhibit that tours galleries, museums, and libraries throughout the State of Michigan and have been shown in Marquette at the Peter White Public Library.
2011 will be the final year for the invitational and select applicants have been invited to participate. This years theme is "Art of the Kitchen" and the traveling show will once again be on display in Marquette at the library during June 2012.
The 2010 show entitled "South of the Border" was on display in month of October 2011 at the library. It was a wonderful time to see not only work by MCQA members but also those from around the state. If you missed the show take a minute to view pictures of the quilts on exhibit by clicking here.
The 2009 show entitled "The Art of Nature" exhibited at Peter White Library during October 2010. Many MCQA members' work was included in the show. Take a minute and check out pictures from the exhibit by clicking here.
