 Charity Quilts & Projects

Bay Cliff Health Camp
On Thursday June 24th 42 quilts were delivered to Bay Cliff by Mary Kay Schaefer and Judy Parlato.  These “Nooker Quilts” will be given as gifts to the youngest campers to take home with them as they finish up their two weeks at camp.  There are two different cam sessions for this age group.  Each session has a maximum number of 20 pre-school aged campers.  Forty quilts were needed and guess how many quilts were donated by our group?  Yep!  These 40 small quilts and two twin sized bed quilts were received with much appreciation.  It was apparent that the staff was grateful for the quilts sewn and donated by you the angels from MCQA.  Wow!  What an awesome group we have!  If you want to check out Bay Cliff Health Camp, log on to their website at www.baycliff.org for more information.

Teddy Bears
The Teddy Bear project is an important part of the charity work done each year by MCQA.  Each year the guild purchases over 100 teddy bears which are then dressed and wrapped lovingly in a small quilt by guild members.  Each bear is then wrapped in a plastic bag, tied with a Christmas ribbon and donated to local charities for needy children.  Each teddy bear has a tag that says "Teddy's quilt was made for you with love by a member of the Marquette County Quilters' Association.  MCQA members are currently making quilts for 2010 but more are needed.  This is a great way to use up small pieces of fabric or practice your quilting techniques.  Read more about the 2009 MCQA teddy bears presented to the Mining Journal Cheer Club by clicking here.  Directions for teddy bear hats and scarves are available by clicking here.

Charity Quilts
One of the most important facets of MCQA is the charity work done in a wide variety of ongoing projects.  Many quilts are made by members each year and donated to Bay Cliff Health Camp, Harbor House a domestic abuse shelter, Jacobetti Veteran's Home, the Pregnancy Care Clinic as well as the neonatal intensive care units at local hospitals.   Our relationship with Bay Cliff has been ongoing for many years as we provide new quilts each year for the younger campers to take home.  Workbees are scheduled throughout the year where members spend a day working together on one of the charity quilt projects. Directions for the charity quilts are available by clicking here.

 Blotto
Blotto is an exciting part of every monthly meeting.  Each month the blotto chairmen provide a different pattern for a quilt block.  If you elect to participate, you have all month to complete your block or blocks within the guidelines given by the committee.  At the next meeting you must bring you completed block(s) which will enter your name in a drawing to win all of the blocks made for that month.  If you make five blocks, your name gets entered five times!  What a fun way to try a new block plus have the possibility of winning enough of the same blocks to make a quilt!  Remember Block + Lotto = Blotto

Summer Blotto Block
Join the fun this summer and make this great "Butterfly" block.   Don't worry about intriquite piecing, rules, sizes or patterns.  The Blotto girls want you to be free to experiment with the only definite that it needs to be a butterfly!  Choose a light blue background and think of the colors in your Crayola box and just have fun!  Instructions are available by clicking here.  Make as many as you'd like for more chances to win and bring your completed blocks to the September meeting!

And The Winner Is?

At the January meeting an exciting challenge was issued to those members that have been past winners of Blotto.  The only condition was that the member still hadn't made or finished a quilt with their winning blocks.  Longarm quilters Chris Wiik, Nancy Frassetto and Becky Lutey challenged those members to complete their quilt tops and they would offer free quilting to three winning quilts!  Five quilts were shown at the March meeting made by members Gwendolyn, Rosemary, Corrine, Marcia, and Traci.  Because of small particpation in the challenge, all five members received free quilting.  You can see pictures of four of quilt tops in the March Show & Tell photos by clicking here.  Many thanks to Chris, Nancy and Becky for their generous offer.
