Charity Quilts
A new document has recently been completed showing sizes, instructions and contact information for each of the MCQA ongoing charity projects.  We now have a contact person for each of the ongoing charities.  Their names are shown on the Officers/Committees web page.  Please click here to view this document.

One of the most important facets of MCQA is the charity work done in a wide variety of ongoing projects.  Many quilts are made by members each year and donated to
Bay Cliff Health Camp, Harbor House a domestic abuse shelter in Marquette, the Iron Mountain Veteran's Hospital, the Pregnancy Care Clinic in Marquette as well as the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at local hospitals.   Our relationship with Bay Cliff has been ongoing for many years as we provide new quilts each year for the younger campers to take home as well as larger quilts that remain permanently at Bay Cliff.  Workbees are scheduled throughout the year where members spend a day working together on one of the charity quilt projects. Directions for the charity quilts are available by clicking here.  Please be sure to make your quilts the appropriate size that is needed by each organization.  If you have questions, please contact the person responsible for each charity.  Their names may be seen by clicking here.  Thanks for helping.

MCQA Donates Excess Fabric to Area Churches
Prior to moving the MCQA inventory to our new storage space, members sorted and organized all of our excess fabric.  Over the years so much fabric has been donated to us that it was agreed that it was time to share with other local groups that do charity quilts.   A large delivery of fabric was made to several local churches who were so in need of fabric to continue their missions.

Bay Cliff Health Camp
2011 & 2012
Chris Wiik has been busy organizing the Bay Cliff quilt project for 2012.  With her great group of Tuesday quilters, kits were prepared and passed out to members and the completed tops returned to Chris for quilting.  Currently most of the quilts are finished for 2012 and they're already thinking about 2013!!  We had a great time doing Show & Tell at the May 2011 meeting with the 40+ completed quilts.  The pictures taken at the meeting may be seen by clicking here.  Thanks again to everyone that has helped with this project and especially to Chris for the many hours of quilting she has provided.  Also thanks to Peg Gagnon who donated many yards of cheerful fabric for the Bay Cliff Project as well as Gloria Pansier who offered to commericially clean and bag all of the quilts. The kids were so excited when they received their quilts in June!  Please contact Chris if you would like to be a part of this great charity project.

Teddy Bears

Report from the 2011 Teddy Bear Committee
2011 was a very successful year!  100 dressed bears with quilts were delivered as follows:

20 - St. Vincent's - Marquette
20 - Salvation Army - Marquette
20 - St. Vincent's - Gwinn
20 - St. Vincent's - Ishpeming
20 - Salvation Army - Ishpeming

Also, 14 dressed bears with quilts (the smaller bears left over from a previous year) were delivered to Harbor House in Marquette.  It was so much fun every month at the MCQA meetings to see the different outfits and quilts that were brought in. Once a teddy bear was dressed and wrapped in a quilt they seem to develop their own little personality.  The support of everyone made it such a fun project to be a part of. We not only ended up with the 100 quilts we need each year, but also had the 14 extra quilts and outfits for the smaller bears and we have 13 quilts and 11 sweaters to pass on to Tracy and Linda to start the 2012 year.
A big "THANK YOU" to everyone for helping make the teddy bear project for 2011 a huge success.  Judy, Pauline, & Bev

The Teddy Bear project is an important part of the charity work done each year by MCQA.  Each year the guild purchases over 100 teddy bears which are then dressed and wrapped lovingly in a small quilt by guild members.  Each bear is then wrapped in a plastic bag, tied with a Christmas ribbon and donated to local charities for needy children.  Each teddy bear has a tag that says "Teddy's quilt was made for you with love by a member of the Marquette County Quilters' Association. Pictures of the 2011 Teddy Bears may be seen by clicking here.   MCQA members are already making quilts and clothing for 2012.  This is a great way to use up small pieces of fabric or practice your quilting techniques.  Use your own design, quilt as desired and make your Teddy Bear quilts approximately 20" square.  Turn them in at any MCQA meeting.  Read more about the 2009 MCQA teddy bears presented to the Mining Journal Cheer Club by clicking here.  Directions for teddy bear hats and scarves are available by clicking here.  New directions for teddy bear sweaters are available by clicking here.

Neonatal Quilts
A friendship group was formed many years ago with the purpose of providing quilts to the neonatal departments of local hospitals.  Records have been kept since 2003 and to date this wonderful group has contributed 167 quilts to many special babies in Marquette County.  The group averages between 25 - 30 quilts a year.  This is a very informal group that welcomes you to drop by their monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month.  Check the calendar for dates and location.

Blotto

Blotto is an exciting part of every monthly meeting.
The blotto block directions will be given to members wishing to participate at a monthly meeting.  At the following monthly meeting, you must bring your completed block(s) which will enter your name in a drawing to win all of the blocks made for that month.  If you make five blocks, your name gets entered five times!  What a fun way to try a new block plus have the possibility of winning enough of the same blocks to make a quilt!  Remember Block + Lotto = Blotto
